Once you have narrowed down your possible table lamp choices by eliminating any fixtures with the wrong finish, the next step is to concentrate upon the size of the lamp. Because so many of us like to read in bed, it is important to find lamps that will be tall enough to cast light downward towards the book or magazine we might be reading. Lamps that are too short will cast shadows so you want to find fixtures that are at least 3 inches or more above where your eyes would normally be when reading (a lamp that is parallel to your eyes will cause glare and those that are too short will cast shadows).
Secondly, you need to look at the size of the table lamp. You can determine the correct size by looking at the night stand where it will be placed upon. A simple rule to follow is this: get a lamp that stands just at the same level as your bed head or one that falls just below it. Also, if you are more of a reading-before-bed person, you need to get a larger lampshade so that your eyes will not have to squint. The size of the table light should not also be too big, because chances are you are going to want to place other items on the night stand too.
A recent change has been the introduction of plain colored lamps. You could not buy plain black table lamps then. Brass was probably the most common material used. Others were pottery, glass and cast iron.
